A side arch, in the 'Ecce Homo' church, inside the Convent of the Sisters of Sion on the Via Dolorosa.
It was considered the ‘Ecce Homo’ arch in the past, and was revealed as Emperor Hadrian's Triumphal Arch dating back to the Second century AC.
The Romans used to torment those they crucified, before they died. The Roman soldiers whipped Jesus, dressed Him in royal purple, crowned Him with a crown of thorns, spat on Him, mocked Hm, bowed to Him and
said: "Hail, King of the Jews!". It is reasonable to assume that the Roman
soldiers' abuse of Jesus in front of the whole regiment took place in the Antonia Fortress, which was a Roman army post. Pilate led Him out to the crowd dressed in His "royal" robes, and cried "Ecce Homo" - Behold the Man!
